Time flies when you're having fun

It has been a while since I was on here blurting out what I was thinking. It turns out there are not many negative points about studying abroad twice. That was maybe obvious right? When I first got the news I would be in the Netherlands for six months to finish my degree I thought well it won't get any better than FN. Apparently I had nothing to worry about as both experiences are incomparable. So if your wondering what has been on my mind these last two months, it's mainly bikes, cold weather and asking myself why the Netherlands don't accept Mastercard.

They say dutch people are very direct and get to the point. I have yet to see this from anyone I have met here. The food is questionable if your a bit of a health freak as the bitterballen that appears on every menu has been fried to its core. Also, turns out they have meat in them. Oops. The stroopwafels however are a delightful treat that I overindulged on my first two weeks here. Again, not healthy! But we bike. We bike everywhere, so that makes up for it right? It has taken six weeks but some of us have finally mastered biking with no hands. Kind of. There have been a few falls there and there. As bikers, we become a tiny bit inconsiderate with any other means of transport as having our own lanes and traffic lights gives us a powerful feeling or something. It becomes believable then that there are more bikes than people in this country. You get used to the sudden herby scent that hits you when walking slash biking through town and that cold wind that cuts through you. The lovely dutch peeps are the tallest in the world and a good 85% of them speak english, so learning words from the locals is a little tricky.

I have met a bunch of cool people from all over the place. My english accent is getting effected by all the Americans, who have a worrying addiction to coffee by the way. My phone dependency has decreased along with my communication skills. I find myself with 20 something daily unread messages from back home. My cooking abilities change from day to day, some days I'm a master chef making vegetable curry that my room mates nibble on, others I'm a hot water and packet soup kind of gal.

Making all these new friends is putting a dent in my imaginary bank account reserved for trips. We have managed to hop on a few trains here and there and discovered a few places in this flat as a pancake country, which has me more and more hooked as the weeks passed, Nijmegen especially. The whole idea of studying somewhere for a few months is great until you remember it's for a few months. I was looking for some pics to go with this post. Turns out I don't document my time here as much as I thought. I'll try to do better.

Btw, there was ice on this beach.

What's your goal?

Life goals, something not many people really think about. I, on the other hand, have a sort of obsession  when it comes to thinking about the future and life in general, what are we doing? Where are we going? What is it all for? At the end of the day we are just mere pawns, answering to bishops who answer to the knights and the rooks who answer to the king and the queen, not literally of course, but you get what I mean, just pieces in a game we call life. Ask yourselves right now what are your life goals? What do you want to get out of life? Health, money, love, friendship, travel... so many things people aspire to. I have no clue when it comes to what I want. We study to work, work to pay bills, pay bills to live 'comfortably', live 'comfortably' to be happy, be happy to enjoy life and enjoy life to eventually die. How many of us are really enjoying life or doing what we want?  When is it too late to go after your life goals? At this very moment, 18:04 on ...

Bettering the world, together.

All I keep seeing on social media these last few days is how we can make a better world together? what makes anyone think that it is even possible? It's us who are ruining, more and more each year, the world itself. Some say why do we think we can fix it? I say there is no loss in trying.  Unfortunately we live in a world where money is power and power is key to success, so they say. Where is this way of thinking getting us? In debt and compliant to others. It takes movements like terrorism in Europe or random shootings in the States for anyone to acknowledge the state the world is in.  The younger generation, or what is know to some as generation Y or millennium generation, those born in the mid 80's and 90's, worry about what can be done to help the world as a whole.  This is a worry that most generations before us didn't have, maybe because they weren't generally as privileged as we are, most of us grew up with all out fundamental needs met...

Career prospects: Spain vs the rest of the world.

When you study abroad you meet people from all over the world. You exchange cultural traditions, you maybe try to learn some words in their language but you also discuss the differences about academics, about work prospects and each others plans for the future.  This is actually really depressing for someone who lives or studies in Spain. The chances of you getting a job after graduation in Spain in your field is around 60-65% depending on your university (public schools only). This of course is only applicable if you have gained some previous experience, which the majority of us haven’t or won’t. ‘You can’t get a job without experience’. How do you gain experience then if no company will give you the chance?  When you compare this to other universities around the world or not necessarily by university but by country it becomes quite scary. In Spain we do a four year course and then are facing a one year master course. Master courses are made for you to speciali...
