Bettering the world, together.

All I keep seeing on social media these last few days is how we can make a better world together? what makes anyone think that it is even possible?
It's us who are ruining, more and more each year, the world itself. Some say why do we think we can fix it? I say there is no loss in trying.

Unfortunately we live in a world where money is power and power is key to success, so they say. Where is this way of thinking getting us? In debt and compliant to others. It takes movements like terrorism in Europe or random shootings in the States for anyone to acknowledge the state the world is in.

The younger generation, or what is know to some as generation Y or millennium generation, those born in the mid 80's and 90's, worry about what can be done to help the world as a whole.

This is a worry that most generations before us didn't have, maybe because they weren't generally as privileged as we are, most of us grew up with all out fundamental needs met...but I ask myself why do people think we are worse off than those alive 50-100 years ago?

Average life expectancies are on the up while child mortality rates are going down, global poverty is on the decrease (fewer people in extreme poverty), global GDP is on the rise, global literacy rates/education/access to information is on the up, number of deaths due to war is on the decrease since WWII.

The only reason we think we are worse off than those before us is mainly down to the public media, it shows only the negatives going around, you don't generally see anything positive on the news, some might say but that's what the news is for. Sorry but 'news' isn't synonym of bad, news is information.

Back to generations Y's main worry, we set out not only to help ourselves but also to help others, or at least we try to. But it makes me wonder, by focusing on helping and changing so much, is it just slowing us down when it comes to taking action? Why think about change when you can do something about it? Whether it is donating food, time or clothing. Things can be done, and it doesn't generally take a lot of effort.

We can't, with our own hands, stop terrorism or someone shooting another, but we can help those who need it, we can volunteer, we can recycle, we can stop buying products that come from animal exploration, we can be help the old man with his shopping on the bus, we can be kinder, we can be greener, we can't however, stop people buying guns or governments making weapons. This doesn't mean we have to sit still and watch the human race ruin the most precious thing given to us, earth.

Don't think. Do.

What is technology doing to us socially?

This isn't an infrequent topic to read about in recent years, but it is definitely something I consider relevant to most and necessary to point out. 'What would happen if the titanic happened now?' This is also a question that many have posted on their networks, think about it. This image is probably the best reflexion or answer to the question. I am 90% sure most would be trying to take a snap of what was happening and make it trending topic! We are living in a time where people find it easier to socialise virtually than in real life, I must admit I for one have an account on many social networks, and use them frequently, I do not however consider myself to be addicted to them. I do not feel I need to check them every 10 seconds, but use them mainly when I am bored. A few days ago, I went out with some friends for a night out and there was a moment, or a few, where everyone was on their mobile, whether it was checking Instagram, Snapchat or their messages I d...

Who's the strange one?

I'm a very curious person, the sort of person who, if interested in something, will research every last details of this. Next week is the deadline for 'erasmus' applications to study a term (or more) abroad and I have found myself surrounded by people asking me all about it. I seem to be the only person with a basic knowledge on the subject in my circle of friends. As me and some friends have been preparing a presentation for one of my university subjects, we have been talking about 'known' bloggers here in Spain, I am supposed to give examples in my presentation and my friends have given me loads of names of people with 'funny' blogs or 'funny you-tubers', when I told them I had no idea who any of these people are they were shocked. They may know everything about insignificant matters such as funny videos but at the end of the day none of them have a clue about what they are actually interested in, for example, studying abroad. Some say I take...

It's not what you know, it's WHO you know.

I realise I only just posted yesterday, and never post this frequently but writing is the only way I seem to get anything off my mind lately. I have also realised how much I admire someone who knows what they are doing with their lives... I'm twenty one and have no clue what I actually want to do. How do you know? How can you choose one thing to dedicate yourself to for the rest of your life? When does it become clear what your 'calling' is? I have been told I don't know how many times that it's never too late for anything, but maybe it is. The thought of actually getting to where you want at the age of thirty terrifies me. As you know, it's finals time and everyone is at the library cramming as much in as possible. I was there the other day thinking how many of you are studying what you really want to study? How many of you are doing because your parents or someone else has made you? How many of you are actually going to give 100% to that future jo...
